A rice cooker is a piece of cookware that can greatly enhance the quality of the rice you prepare for your meals. When using a rice cooker, it is important to get the size that is right for you.
As we all know, households come in all sizes, ranging from small ones containing only one person to huge ones with ten or twelve people in them. So naturally, the needs of each at either end of the scale will differ greatly, especially as regards the amount of food required for a meal. A single person preparing small meals for themself will need a good deal less food than a family with ten children, two parents, and maybe several grandparents.
For a single person, obviously a large rice cooker is not needed. A small rice cooker will be all that is needed here. Small rice cookers will handle 3 cups of dry rice. After adding water and cooking, you will find yourself with about 6 cups of cooked, steamed, rice. This will certainly be sufficient for several meals and unused portions should be refrigerated. However, even smaller amounts can also be cooked in a 3 cup rice cooker; one cup of raw rice will yield about 2 cups of rice. Be aware that amounts of rice smaller than 1 cup can stick or burn more easily.
A medium sized rice cooker will steam 5 cups of raw rice into about 10 cups of cooked. This will provide a meal for 6 to 7 people. As many of the families in this country have begun to use more rice in their diet, this size rice cooker is a good idea. This size rice cooker would also be good for single people or couples if they do any entertaining. A small dinner party would be just the right size for rice prepared with a 5 cup rice cooker. It would probably not be a good idea to cook very small amounts of rice in a cooker of this size, they would be even more likely to burn or stick than they would in a 3 cup cooker.

At the top of the rice cooker family is the cooker that will prepare 10 cups of raw rice. This will give you approximately 20 cups of cooked rice. A very large family should find themselves adequately provided with the right amount of rice using one of these larger cookers. This amount of rice will feed up to 15 people. If you do a good deal of entertaining or host family get-togethers, this size rice cooker will probably be perfect for you. It will not only provide an ample amount of rice, but will remove any worries about how the rice will turn out. Some families will take advantage of the ‘keep warm’ feature on these cookers and just dip into this large rice cooker whenever rice is needed in the course of the day.

Pomegranate Chicken Over Brown Rice
Image by TarynMarie It turned out good! Yay! The only think was that I wish I had time to make foccacia bread with some olive oil to go with this meal. It was sweet and needed more than the brown rice to even that out. Next time.
Silver Spring #ReclaimMLK Sit-In 14
Image by Stephen D. Melkisethian Silver Spring, Maryland, January 24, 2014. The Montgomery County Civil Rights Coalition hosted an hour long rally and brief march in downtown Silver Spring to protest ongoing police violence without accountability, most egregiously against people of color. This action was in solidarity with hundreds of similar events nationwide celebrating the true legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King. I counted around fifty participants during the hour I was on the street. Interactions between the heavily armed, bullet-proof vested Montgomery County Police and the demonstrators were generally respectful and peaceful.
