Taking a typical cooked meal and reviewing the amount of nutrition derived from the ingredients, it is worrying to realise that more than 80% of the nutrition available in the raw version has been cooked out of the food in the preparation process which involves boiling, roasting, baking and especially the executives’ friend – microwaving.
Cooked food raises cholesterol levels, reduces nutrition and produces little benefit for our poor bodies other than to satisfy hunger. Well, there is certainly something to be said for not feeling hungry, yet hunger may be as easily satisfied, if not more so, by eating raw foods.
Taking a meal that has been prepared in a juicer, such as raw spinach, perhaps a raw carrot, some coconut, flax seed or goji berries, celery and apple, and comparing it to a cooked meal that consists of roasted meat accompanied by boiled vegetables (which let’s face it, is what many of us live on), the raw food meal will punch far above its weight as a healthy option and it may be consumed in five or ten minutes, without producing a kitchen full of used pots and pans.
Starting a raw food diet need not necessarily mean a religious conversion to all things raw, although many do convert to a complete raw food staple. Beginning a healthy eating habit need not be an epiphany. However, more than 90% of people who try a raw food addition to their diet never return exclusively to a cooked menu. Why? Because the benefits of ‘drinking’ a healthy meal are obvious and in a pressured working life or even a school routine, the convenience of introducing high levels of nutrition into the body in record time is something few people will pass on. Also, the body burns raw food nutrition more efficiently.

Raw food is easy to prepare once you have the right equipment in place; the right equipment being a cold press masticating juicer and an efficient chopping and slicing system such as a good quality mandolin or other method of fresh food preparation. Invest in some great ‘super foods’ to add to the equation such as wheatgrass and you have a recipe for health and energy that far outweighs an hour in the gym each day – even better if you do the hour in the gym too!
Taking raw food as a staple simply means letting go of the concept that cooked recipes are the only way to consume tasty foods that stimulate the palette and nourish the body sufficiently. Far from being a less than healthy way to live, raw foods provide all the nourishment the body needs and need not be consumed cold. For those who really cannot face their food cold, heating food (steaming is best) to not more than 120ºF will still retain nutrition and allow all the comfort of traditional meal options.
When preparing organic raw foods, pay particular attention to hygiene and appropriate storage.
If you are considering a healthier lifestyle, start with a single gear juicer. I recommend the Samson Juicer from Purely Juicers. If you prefer a twin gear juicer try the Omega Juicer
