How do celebrities like Demi Moore and Donna Karen stay camera ready? They follow a raw food diet. The idea behind this way of life is heating foods above 116 degrees destroys the nutrients in the food, hence destroying the “life force”. Live food, live body.Â
The raw food diet is not as easy as eating raw broccoli and carrots. All processed foods, foods with additives, and pasteurized foods, such as milk and cheeses, are avoided. It is also advised that all foods be organic, so this could get to be a bit expensive. The benefits could be well worth the effort, however.
There is evidence that many people who follow the diet are not only concerned about their waistline, but also about the health benefits. Although nothing has been confirmed, there are more than a few people out there who eat this way to help control their diabetes and even cancer.Â
So just what can one eat?Â
-Nuts and seeds, as long as they are raw
-Cold pressed oils
-Milk made from almonds or other nuts.
-Sun dried fruits
-Fresh Juices, most people will juice their own to be on the safe side.
There are, of course, some concerns with this way of life. Getting enough protein could be a problem, seeing as only raw meats are allowed, most followers choose to go all vegetarian or vegan. Calcium is also a nutrient that is cut very low when following this diet. Many followers must use supplements to meet all of their bodily needs, and again, these supplements can become expensive and must be all raw.

Proponents of the raw food diet say that this is the way humans were meant to eat. There is no other primates who heat their food before eating. Raw meats were once a part of the human diet along with the obvious fresh produce. There are some experts who believe, however, that the protein from cooked meats may have had a part in changing our brain and allowing humans to strive.Â
One last thing to consider before following such a life style is the side effects. Once started on a raw food diet it will take up to a week, if not longer, for your body to become used to the new foods and preparations. Headaches, for instance, are a common side effect in the beginning because of the lack of caffeine. Another thing to be careful of is food intoxication due to the lack of heat which usually cooks away any bacteria. Food poisoning can also occur when one is unsure of what foods are okay to eat raw. Apricot kernels, for example, contain cyanide, and raw kidney beans are toxic due to the chemical phytohaemagglutinin- which would usually be cooked out.
As with any life style change one should check with their doctor before beginning an all raw diet.
