The name, Spirulina, comes from the Latin word for "helix," as these organisms form swirling, microscopic strands. Spirulina does not produce a toxin, but large concentrations of cells known as blooms can cause fish kills by depleting the available dissolved oxygen in the surrounding water. This species is nontoxic, and there have been no reports of illness or other harmful effects from it in Florida waters.
