Here’s an anecdote told by Former US President George Bush: “I do not like broccoli. I haven’t liked it since I was a little kid and my mother made me eat it. I’m President of the United States, and I’m not going to eat any more broccoli!” Truth to tell, most kids do hate to eat broccoli and not enough cajoling from stressed parents could make them eat the greenest of vegetables. Unfortunately, the worldwide financial crisis also affects what people eat in more ways than one.
Nowadays, with the financial crisis continuing, budgets are really tight-from governments, businesses, companies, charity organizations, and even households. For employees with regular payroll, when the budget is stretched to the limit, they could count on a cash til payday loan against their salaries. Short term loans like these could really help them augment their income, particularly when there are money emergencies to deal with that are outside the household budget, such as car repairs, medical bills, and other food expenses. Today, it is easy and safe to get faxless payday loans online because there are many reputable websites that offer financial services.
However, when it comes to food expenses, even with a tight budget, it is not advisable to cut down the money for food, more importantly, when the food is for a family with growing kids. It is better to save on petrol or energy bills and make little adjustments to the family’s lifestyle in order to cut back expenses from such things, but never on food. When families lessen their food intake because of money troubles, it would not be long before medical bills start piling up, too. The best way to maximize the food budget is to choose wisely, the food bought and consumed. Picking the right food is not just wise budgeting but also adds to a healthy diet that could protect the family from heart disease, diabetes, cancers, and even depression. There are certain inexpensive but nutritious foods that protect people from the range of disease mentioned. The key is knowing those foods, why they work, and how the average Australian could practice healthy eating at home. And guilt-free, of course.
There are several general principles on eating healthy. The first is to eat fresh food. Sometimes picking fresh food instead of processed products can be a bit expensive but people should think of it as an investment to their health. The old saying, eating an apple a day keeps the doctor away, is true because eating healthy would lessen the possibility of falling ill to debilitating diseases or even the common virus such as the flu. Secondly, get sugar from whole foods like fruits and whole grains. Instead of drinking sodas and sports drinks, try fresh, home-made orange juice. For snacks, busy employees could bring a banana to work to munch on or any kind of berries. Lastly, get salt from natural and unprocessed sources like fish. Low sodium in the food intake would decrease high blood pressure, and at the same time, provide natural vitamin D and omega-3 fats to help in preventing depression.

Happy Birthday Ella!
Image by Kerri Lee Smith Ella has quite a story. Seven years ago, on the Friday before Labor Day weekend, the animal control officer brought four little kittens into the animal hospital where I work. The kittens were born in an industrial park where workers had tried for nearly a week to find and catch the kittens after their mother had been hit and killed by a car. Finally, after a big summer storm, Betina (the ACO) heard a mewing in a storm drain and saw Ella peeking out. Once Ella came out, her three brothers followed. They were very hungry but otherwise looked healthy. The problem was, they would only eat if someone was right there with them and so were starving even though they now had plenty of food available to them. Betina couldn't be with them all day so brought them to our hospital to see if someone could take care of four emotionally needy kittens. This was my idea of a dream come true - teeny, tiny kittens who needed me to cuddle with them all day long. From the moment I brought Ella and her three brothers home, it was clear that she was the leader of the pack. When I put the kittens on the bathroom floor with some food, her brothers started eating but she had to come and check me out first. I was lying on the floor and she climbed right up my chest and put her nose right up to my face and inspected me. I must have passed muster because she turned around and went to eat and we have been BFFs ever since. Ella is by far the smartest, fastest, wiliest, most mischievous cat I have ever known. She is also healthy and worry free. She's sweet and has a beautiful, shiny black coat, but is also the hardest cat to photograph so is under represented here on Flickr. I feel so lucky that I was the one taking the appointment with Betina the day she brought four, needy little kittens into the clinic. It's the day I met my Ellie Belly. Three more pictures in the comments.
Message to The World
Image by Eduard V. Kurganov Artist Statement The list of the worldly issues minor and major that impact personal experiences seems to be endless. Some of those issues may be: human overconsumption, intrusive surveillance, racial and other forms of inequality and discrimination, deforestation, air and water pollution, religious control, etc. In our contemporary society we are all potentially impacted by these negative forces since the time we start developing in our mother’s wombs. Humanity, right now, has all the necessities and commodities to provide every person on this planet with a comfortable place to sleep, healthy food to eat, clean water to drink, fresh clothes to wear, and a proper healthcare. But yet the said destructive forces are too overpowering, so the future seems doomed. For this photographic project making “the personal is political,” I approached different people and asked how they wanted our world to change and to write out this desire with black marker on a white board. In an attempt to allow the people photographed to freely and fearlessly express their truest thoughts about any issues that bother them, I asked them to wear a Guy Fawkes mask to conceal their identities. I chose specifically to use this mask because of its long history, the meaning and the symbolism it carries, and the emotions and thoughts it invokes in most people who are familiar with the mask. Guy Fawkes was a revolutionary who did not like the status quo, and wanted to overthrow corrupt government and make the world a better place. Hollywood greatly popularized his image via the movie “V For Vendetta,” so to this day he is remembered by many people around the globe as the one who opposed the ruling system. The mask symbolizes protest against tyranny, totalitarianism, any kind of oppression, and any other type of mistreatment and misconduct towards other fellow human beings. It symbolizes a great desire for a better and happier life for all people. It reminds us that we all are creators of our own destiny, builders of our own fate. Except the limitations you place ourselves into by our your own beliefs there are no limitations to what people can do.
